Deep Sea Lighting Collection
Drawings and Screenprints

My current body of work draws its influences from nature, more specifically the deep sea environment and its cycles of growth, maturity and decay. While I have harboured a fascination for the deep sea environment for many years, this interest was consolidated on a recent trip to Japan, during which I visited the vast Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, as well as the Kaiyukan aquarium in Osaka, one of the largest in the world. I was mainly fascinated by the colours, textures and patterns of raw fish and the innards of shells, as well as displays of fragile jellyfish, insectoid giant spider crabs and vibrantly patterned octopi.

The Deep Sea Lighting Collection reflects those sources of inspiration. The vibrant colour gradations, organic forms and contrasting textures are defining aspects of my work, and create an aesthetic which does not merely emulate nature, but instead mutates the artificial into the natural. The palette I have chosen reflects my interest in the deep sea environment, with some pieces incorporating the bright, vibrant colours of blossoming sea anemones and urchins, while others use more subtle colours to reflect the gentle, diffused glow of the submerged marine environment.

I wanted to create light objects which blur the boundaries between man and nature – unusual, flamboyant objects which convey my fascination for the deep sea environment, but are ultimately designed to be displayed in people’s homes. The Deep Sea Lighting Collection ranges from the battery powered “Barnacle” mini lights, to the flamboyant “Jellyfish” chandelier, and is available in a range of colours and designs to suit every budget and taste. Each piece is handmade, and although best enjoyed while lit up, also represents an artistic object in its own right when not in use.

Drawings and Screenprints form another essential part of my Portfolio, with a particular focus on drawing from life. Recently I have become particularly fascinated with portraiture. I have expressed this through a series of screenprints, combining quick sketches taken from life with intricate, organic patterns. I have also used screenprinted backgrounds in my larger life drawings to create rich tapestries of texture and colour. The juxtaposition of the human figure and the natural environment is at the centre of my artistic vision.
